Permission Slips for Artists: Develop Your Own Agency

I like the term “develop your own agency.”

In my personal world, that can be about growing the studio. But in our shared world, that’s about taking control of one’s life and career.

Taking agency is a conversation around identity and freedom

  • honoring the past

  • presenting the present

  • designing the future

This week, while in a mentorship call with Ran Segall of Flux Academy, I shared one of my theme songs with fellow agency owner Jazzmin Celeste — thanks to Shayra on my team for sharing this song with me!

In kind, Jazzmin shared this four-part series around “Permission Slips” created by Olivia Wolf of The Stuck(ish) Podcast. It resonated with me — and writing things down helps connect your heart and head.

So I thought I’d share some permission slips with you, alongside these four short episodes…

PERMISSION SLIPS: BELIEFS 🧠

Permission to not know everything.

Permission to question authority.

Permission to change beliefs.

Permission to be imperfect.

Permission to honor your past.

PERMISSION SLIPS: FEELINGS ❤️

Permission to be happy.

Permission to be proud.

Permission to be sad.

Permission to be angry.

Permission to grieve.

Permission to feel your feelings.

Permission to prioritize your needs.

PERMISSION SLIPS: Words 💬

Permission to speak.

Permission to express your emotions.

Permission to express yourself.

Permission to ask for what you want or need.

Permission to ask for help.

Permission to remain silent.

Permission to listen.

Permission to admit mistakes.

Permission to not respond.

Permission to respond later.

PERMISSION SLIPS: ACTIONS 🎬

Permission to take a break.

Permission to rest.

Permission to disconnect.

Permission to say no.

Permission to prioritize.

Permission to dream.

Permission to pursue.

Permission to try.

Permission to start.

Permission to fail.

Permission to succeed.

Permission to grow.

Permission to change.
